Writing your own website content can seem like a challenging task, especially if the language you’re writing in is not your native language.
You may be an expert on the subject, but if you’re worried about grammar rules, sentence structure or word choice, you can easily lose confidence.
Many entrepreneurs have been in that situation (we sure have!), particularly small business owners and freelancers with tiny budgets and great ambitions.
Fortunately, there are tools available to assist you in writing credible website content to showcase your products or services.
Grammarly
Grammarly (app.grammarly.com) is a free online writing assistant that helps you improve your grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, and engagement.
It also offers writing suggestions based on your preferred audience, intent, and formality. This is especially useful if you could use some guidance on setting the right tone of voice for your business and customers.
Grammarly is not just for beginners, it’s a great tool for anyone. At Rhamnous, we regularly use Grammarly because, no matter how experienced you are, errors can sneak in and there is always room for improvement.
You can either paste your text on the Grammarly website or add the Grammarly extension to your browser. With the extension, Grammarly works directly in your email, on social media sites, and most other websites.
You can also download Grammarly for MS Office.
Hemingway
Hemingway (hemingwayapp.com) is another useful free tool. It focuses on readability by helping you simplify your writing and improve clarity. It offers a readability score and highlights sentences that are hard to read.
Did you know that sentences in an active voice are easier to understand than sentences in a passive voice? If you use passive voice, Hemingway will alert you so you can change it.
It also counts how many adverbs you use. This is more helpful than you might think because people tend to overuse adverbs to intensify their writing. Many of us here at Rhamnous have caught ourselves doing that!
You can paste your text on the Hemingway website for instant suggestions. Edit the text right there and see how your changes improve the readability score.
There you go, two free writing tools that offer a wide range of suggestions to correct and improve your content. Use them to your heart’s content. If you feel that you need more support, both tools also offer a paid version with extra features.
Happy writing!
